In a recent study, the University of Oregon’s Julie Hollander found that rape and attempted rape occurred at a lower rate among women who had taken an empowerment-based self defence class than a control group of non-trained women. She surveyed 117 participants in the class and 108 who didn’t attend, and compared their reports of completed rape and attempted rape a year later.

The results showed that participants who took the empowerment class reported a rape rate of 5.2 percent, compared to 9.8 percent for the control group. The difference was not significant for those who had attempted rape or assault.

Despite the reduction in rape reported by the class, it’s important to remember that most women are attacked on the ground, and women’s legs are often stronger than their arms.
