Whether they’re designed to be cute and functional or over-the-top badass, self defence gadgets aim to help people feel safe when they’re out and about. With tasers becoming multi-functional and pepper sprays being embedded in cellphone cases, it seems like there are always new ways to stay prepared for dangerous situations. And while these inventions are meant to make us more secure, their designers also put a lot of thought into form, so they’re not just bulky and ugly but actually look good on your body or in your hand.
For example, this pair of stun guns that looks like jogging weights or brass knuckles, but can deliver 1.9 million volts when activated, is the perfect combination of form and function. They also have a leather holster in case you want to keep them sheathed around your neck or wrist. The inventor of this device claims it was inspired by the frequent dog attacks on joggers, walkers, and bicyclists, which he says can’t be stopped with regular items like sticks or canes.
While it may not be a complete solution in a dangerous situation, this self defence tool is a fun way to get some practice in for fending off attackers. It’s designed to be a training aid for martial arts students, allowing them to work on their eye jabs and other punching moves. And while it can be a bit of a hassle to use, it’s definitely the most unique way to practice self defence.
Another popular way to stay ready for danger is with a personal alarm. These devices can either warn intruders by ringing loudly or alert others of a dangerous situation with a voice-activated alarm that can be set off by simply waving your phone around. Many of these alarms are small enough to carry with you, making them a convenient addition to your everyday carry (EDC) pack.
Of course, a lot of these gadgets won’t do much to protect you if an attacker is determined to break into your home or car. So, it’s still important to have other safety precautions in place, including an escape plan and familiarity with local laws regarding the possession of weapons.
